Lyndon Morgan, 20-years-old, a soldier with the Royal Artillery was from Stonehouse, Gloucestershire and was killed by an IRA booby trap bomb while on foot patrol in Carrickmore. Two other soldiers were injured in the explosion.
All 3 soldiers were airlifted to the Tyrone County Hospital where Gunner Morgan died a short time later. The patrol had been passing a small shop at 10:30PM on the Drumakilly road when the explosion occurred.
There was a gas cylinder that always sat outside the shop and it is believed the IRA switched it with another cylinder they packed with 40lbs of explosives and detonated it by command wire.
Gunner Morgan joined the army in 1985 and in January 1988 he began his tour of Northern Ireland.
